Overview
Gogyo Ramen is a sleek and sultry addition to Melbourne’s Japanese dining scene, known for its signature kogashi (burnt) ramen—a deeply caramelised, smoky bowl that packs flavour and intensity. Located on vibrant Brunswick Street, this Fitzroy venue is the first Australian outpost of the Kyoto-born ramen house, part of the global Ippudo family.
Inside, the restaurant balances moody lighting, polished concrete, and blackened timber with warm service and high energy. The space is divided into intimate booths, counter seating, and communal tables, setting the tone for everything from quick solo meals to atmospheric group dinners.
The menu centres around ramen—but not your typical bowl. Gogyo’s hero dish, the kogashi miso ramen, features charred miso paste cooked in 300°C oil, delivering a complex, smoky broth that’s rich and unforgettable. There’s also tonkotsu, shoyu, and vegetarian options, plus premium add-ons like slow-cooked chashu pork, seasoned eggs, and house chilli oil.
Beyond ramen, Gogyo also serves a refined selection of Japanese bar snacks and izakaya-style small plates—think karaage chicken, grilled edamame, wagyu skewers, and tofu with yuzu kosho. A drinks list of sake, Japanese whisky, beer, and cocktails adds to the after-dark appeal.
Gogyo is ramen reimagined—bolder, darker, and more grown-up than your typical noodle stop. It’s ideal for ramen purists seeking depth, or food lovers looking to explore a more elevated expression of Japan’s favourite comfort food.
