Modern Darling Harbour has only existed in its current form since the Australian bicentenary in 1988 having evolved from a primarily industrial and shipping centre. Today, Darling Harbour is a major Sydney tourist precinct that lies directly adjacent to the Sydney City Centre and the area boasts great shopping, dining, nightlife and a number of popular museums.

Some of the major attractions in this area are the Sydney Convention & Exhibition Centre, the Australian National Maritime Museum, the Powerhouse Museum and the Sydney Aquarium. These facilities are complimented by an immense amount of open space, outdoor entertainment areas and gardens, all surrounding the spectacular harbour with Sydney City as a backdrop.

At the northern end of the Darling Harbour area is Pyrmont which houses The Star Casino and Entertainment complex. This includes a number of fine dining establishments, range of bars and lounges and the Sydney Lyric Theatre.
