Overview
Caretaker’s Cottage is one of Melbourne’s most revered small bars, located at 139-141 Little Lonsdale Street, beside Wesley Church in the CBD. Once the residence of the church’s caretaker, this 1914 heritage-listed building is now home to one of the city’s most exciting and intimate drinking venues.
Operated by three Melbourne hospo veterans — Matt Stirling, Jeremy Blackmore, and Alissa Gabriel — the space pays homage to classic cocktail culture while embracing a welcoming, modern spirit. The building retains its charming historic bones, with timber flooring, exposed rafters, and warm lighting. Inside, it’s all about the details: a carefully chosen vinyl collection playing through a high-end sound system, bartenders who know their spirits inside-out, and a short but mighty drinks list that changes regularly.
The cocktail program leans on the classics, often reimagined with inventive twists and an emphasis on perfect balance. The bar also pours an ever-changing selection of wines and local craft beers, while the back bar boasts rare whiskies, boutique gins, and cult aperitivos. There’s no food menu here, but patrons often stop by pre- or post-dinner — the focus is squarely on drinks and atmosphere.
Caretaker’s Cottage doesn’t do bookings, and with its tiny capacity (just a handful of seats and a standing bar), it fills quickly — but that’s part of the charm. The vibe is warm, communal, and musically rich. This isn’t just a bar; it’s an experience, and one that’s earned accolades as one of the world’s best small bars.
