Overview
Mystic Burek, located at 227 Dartmouth Road in Sydenham, is a testament to the power of passion and heritage in culinary arts. Chef and founder Spasia Dinkovski drew inspiration from her Macedonian grandmother's recipes, starting with home-baked pies during the 2020 lockdown. What began as Instagram orders and pop-ups evolved into a cherished local establishment, celebrated for its authentic and inventive Balkan pastries.
The menu features a rotating selection of hand-rolled burek slices, each showcasing Spasia's flair for combining traditional techniques with bold flavors. Highlights include the creamed spinach, parmesan, potato, and Kurdish chili pie, and the lamb with ghee potatoes accompanied by a rich dipping gravy.
Mystic Burek's interior exudes a warm, nostalgic charm, with red and white gingham tablecloths, vintage Balkan memorabilia, and a soundtrack of empowering anthems creating an inviting atmosphere. The café operates with a BYOB policy, encouraging patrons to bring their favorite beverages to enjoy alongside the hearty pies. Regulars often pair their meals with natural wines from the nearby 161 Food + Drink.
While the original café at 227 Dartmouth Road has closed as of September 2024, Mystic Burek continues to thrive through pop-ups and catering services. Spasia remains dedicated to sharing her culinary heritage, with plans to reopen in a new location at 172 Dartmouth Road in the near future .?
