Overview
Tucked away at the base of a residential tower on Russell Street, Marmelo is a calm and confident addition to Melbourne’s CBD dining scene. Opened in 2023 by the team behind Hazel and Dessous, it shares the same philosophy of ingredient-driven, refined simplicity—but with a lighter, café-inspired touch.
The menu celebrates fresh, local produce with a rotating selection of breakfast, brunch, and lunch options that feel both familiar and elevated. Think roasted mushroom toast with soft herbs and parmesan, zucchini fritters with labneh and chilli oil, or perfectly poached eggs with seasonal greens and house sourdough. There’s also a short list of share-style small plates for those wanting something more substantial in the afternoon—ideal with a glass of wine from the compact but thoughtful list.
Coffee is excellent, with a slow and careful approach that fits the venue’s relaxed pace. You’ll also find house sodas, teas, and low-intervention wines served throughout the day. While technically a café, Marmelo leans into wine bar territory by afternoon—bridging the gap between casual dining and contemporary bistro.
The interior is warm and natural, with stone, timber, and linen textures creating a space that’s peaceful yet sophisticated. Service is warm, attentive, and unrushed—making it equally suited for solo reading sessions, quiet catch-ups, or low-key meetings.
Marmelo’s restrained charm, fresh ideas, and welcoming tone make it one of the CBD’s best-kept daytime dining secrets.
